Its horizontal steel perch was preferred by birds over tube-style feeding stations. To deter squirrels, the perch is spring-loaded. The weight of a squirrel will make the perch drop and automatically shut off access to the food. This spring-loaded perch can also be adjusted from a light to heavy tension to include or exclude certain bird species from landing by weight (a list of common birds and the appropriate tension adjustments are included).
